Land Sutra

The Land scripture originated from ancient nature worship. The Earth God was regarded as the deity in charge of land, farming and the home. In ancient agricultural societies, which relied on the land for survival, the tradition of worshipping the land and praying for blessings to eliminate disasters gradually emerged, and thus scriptures came into being. The content of the scriptures mostly expresses gratitude for the nourishment of all things by the land, praying for a bountiful harvest, peace in the home, and the expulsion of evil spirits. On the Spring and autumn social days (such as "the second day of the second lunar month" and "the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month"), people offer sacrifices and recite scriptures, praying for favorable weather in spring and a bountiful harvest in autumn. Before breaking ground to build a house or cultivate farmland, recite scriptures and burn them to pray for the permission and protection of the earth God, so as to avoid violating the "earth taboo".
